You Are the Most Powerful Therapist Your Child Has
Indian families wait an average of 18 months between first concern and first speech therapy session. But parents are with their children 10-12 waking hours per day; a therapist sees the child 45 minutes once or twice a week. These 10 activities require no equipment, work in Hindi or any regional language, and take 5-10 minutes each.
Activity 1: Running Commentary
Narrate your actions in simple language: "Mama is chopping onions. Cutting, cutting." Builds vocabulary passively. Match language level to just above what your child produces.
Activity 2: Pause and Wait
Before giving what the child wants, pause 5-10 seconds. If they reach, say the word and give it. If they vocalise anything, celebrate and give it immediately. Never withhold until distress.
Activity 3: Expand and Recast
When your child says one word, you add one. Child: "ball." Parent: "red ball." This models the next step without correction.
Activity 4: Singing and Rhymes
Hindi rhymes like "Machli Jal ki Raani Hai," Tamil lullabies, Marathi balgeet — songs are easier to produce than conversational speech because melody carries the words.
Activity 5: Choices Not Questions
Replace "What do you want?" with "Do you want the apple or the banana?" — hold up both. Forces only one word or pointing.
Activity 6: AAC Modelling
If your child is learning AAC, you must use it too. Point to symbols while speaking.
Open AAC Board -> — Free Hindi and English AAC board. Use it yourself 10 times a day before expecting your child to use it.
Activity 7: Book Sharing
Point to pictures and label simply: "Cat. The cat is sitting." Let the child turn pages. Do not quiz; comment. Make it enjoyable.
Activity 8: Play Sounds in Pretend Play
"Vroom vroom" for the car, "chomp chomp" when eating — sound play is often the easiest first communicative step for children with speech delays.
Activity 9: Social Scripts for Routines
Teach specific phrases for specific routines, repeated identically: "Shoes on. Let's go." Predictable scripts reduce language demand during transitions.
Activity 10: Follow Their Lead
In a 10-minute play session, let the child choose and you follow. If they roll a car, roll yours and say "zoom!" Child-led play is among the strongest evidence-based approaches for early communication.
Use Visual Schedule -> — Build these activities into predictable daily slots so they happen consistently.
