What is AAC?
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to any method that supplements or replaces spoken language. For autistic children in India who are non-verbal or minimally verbal, AAC can be life-changing — giving them a voice when speech alone is not enough.
AAC includes picture boards, speech-generating devices, apps, and sign language. The most accessible form for Indian families is a picture communication board — a grid of images the child can point to express needs, feelings, and ideas.
Why AAC Works for Autism
Research consistently shows that AAC does not delay speech development — it actually helps many children develop more spoken words. A 2015 meta-analysis found that AAC increased both communication attempts and spoken language in autistic children.
Key benefits include reducing frustration that leads to meltdowns, giving children agency and control, building foundation for literacy, and working at any language level.
How to Use an AAC Board in India
Start with core vocabulary. Words like "more," "stop," "help," "eat," "toilet," and "no" appear across every context. These should be the first symbols you teach.
Use it yourself first. Model pointing to the board while speaking — "Let's have lunch" while pointing to the food symbol. Children learn by watching.
Put the board everywhere: kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, school bag. The board must be available in the moment of need.
Use Hindi labels. Indian children respond better to familiar language. Autism Saathi's AAC board includes both Hindi (खाना, मदद, रुको) and English labels.
