What Does Speech Therapy Do for Autism?
Speech-Language Pathology for autism goes far beyond teaching words. A qualified speech therapist works on functional communication (whatever means the child uses), pragmatics (social use of language), receptive language (understanding), expressive language (conveying thoughts), and feeding/swallowing.
For non-verbal children, the goal is not necessarily speech — it is functional communication, achieved through AAC, gestures, or signing.
When to Start
As early as possible. Early intervention before age 5 produces significantly better outcomes. Seek evaluation immediately if your child has not said any words by 12 months, not combined two words by 24 months, has lost language, or avoids communication. Do not wait for a formal autism diagnosis.
Where to Find Speech Therapists in India
Government (free/subsidized): Ali Yavar Jung National Institute (AYJNISHD) — Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Secunderabad; NIMHANS Bangalore; Government medical college speech therapy departments; District Early Intervention Centres (DEIC).
Private: Expect ₹500–2,500 per session. Verify registration with Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Online sessions available from ₹400–1500/session.
The 80% Rule
Professional therapy sessions are 1–5 hours per week. Your child is home for 100+ hours. Home practice is where most progress happens.
Use Responsive Communication — follow your child's lead and add language to their interests. Expand what they say: if they say "car," say "Red car! Fast car going vroom." Never correct — always expand.
