The Hidden Crisis
A 2019 Indian study found 68% of mothers of autistic children showed clinically significant stress levels. In India, the crisis is compounded by limited respite care, social stigma, extended family pressure, high therapy costs, and mothers disproportionately bearing the caregiving load.
Signs of Burnout
Emotional: Numbness, resentment toward your child (followed by guilt), loss of joy, feeling trapped, crying without knowing why.
Physical: Persistent exhaustion sleep doesn't fix, frequent illness, chronic headaches, sleep disruption.
Cognitive: Difficulty making decisions, memory problems, brain fog, inability to plan.
Behavioral: Withdrawing from relationships, skipping meals, increased alcohol or screen use.
Recovery Steps
1. Acknowledge it — burnout is the predictable result of giving more than you have for too long.
2. Stop adding — identify what can be paused, delegated, or dropped.
3. Sleep — arrange night coverage even once a week.
4. Connect with other autism parents — WhatsApp groups and in-person support groups.
5. Seek professional support — therapy for you is not a luxury.
