What Is Respite Care?
Respite care provides temporary relief for primary caregivers — a break from caregiving while ensuring the person with disability is safely cared for. For autism parents in India, this can be: a few hours daily, overnight, or longer periods.
Respite is not a luxury. It is clinically indicated to prevent caregiver burnout, which directly harms the quality of care the autistic person receives.
Respite Options in India
Family network: The most common and often the best option. Grandparents, siblings, cousins who are comfortable with the child. Invest time training family members in your child's routine and communication system.
Trained caregivers: Home-based trained caregivers who specialize in autism. Available in major cities through special needs staffing agencies. Cost: ₹15,000–40,000/month for part-time.
Day programs: Some autism NGOs run day programs (extended school hours) that function as respite for working parents. Contact AFA, Umang, or city-specific organizations.
Weekend care programs: Limited but growing in major cities — autism-specific weekend programs providing structured care for 6–8 hours.
Residential respite: Very limited in India currently. NIMHANS and a few NGOs offer short-term residential care for specific situations.
Making Respite Happen
The practical barrier is always: "Who would know how to handle my child?"
Invest time now in training people while you are not desperately depleted. Write a detailed care manual: routine, food preferences, communication methods, triggers, calming strategies, emergency contacts. A care manual means any trained person can provide consistent care.
