Why Speech Therapy is the First Priority
For autistic children who are non-verbal, minimally verbal, or have unclear speech, Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) is typically the first and most important therapy to begin. Speech therapists (also called Speech-Language Pathologists or SLPs) work not just on speech sounds but on the entire communication system — understanding language, expressing needs, social communication, and augmentative communication (AAC).
The goal of speech therapy is not necessarily to make every child speak in full sentences. For some children, the goal is functional communication — being able to express basic needs reliably, whether through speech, pictures, devices, or a combination.
What Happens in a Speech Therapy Session
A typical session for an autistic child lasts 45–60 minutes and may include:
- Floor time play — the therapist follows the child's lead to build engagement and joint attention
- AAC training — teaching the child to use a picture board, PECS cards, or speech-generating device
- Articulation work — for children who speak but are difficult to understand
- Language comprehension — understanding instructions, questions, stories
- Pragmatic language — how to start a conversation, take turns, understand sarcasm (for higher-functioning children)
- Parent coaching — teaching parents techniques to use at home between sessions
Home practice between sessions is as important as the sessions themselves. Ask your SLP for a home programme.

- Minimum effective dose: 2 sessions per week
- Optimal: 3–5 sessions per week, especially in early years
- Results are visible in 3–6 months of consistent therapy
How to Find a Speech Therapist in India
Verify credentials: A qualified SLP in India should have:
- Bachelor of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (BASLP), OR
- Master of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (MASLP)
- Registered with Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI)
Do not accept therapy from someone without RCI registration.
Finding one:
- Ask your developmental pediatrician for referrals
- ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) has an international locator
- Autism Society of India maintains a therapist directory
- Parent Facebook groups for your city (search "autism parents [city name]") are the most reliable for current recommendations
AAC as Part of Speech Therapy
If your child is not yet verbal or has limited speech, ask your SLP about AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). Good SLPs embrace AAC — it does not stop speech development. It gives the child a voice while speech is developing.
You do not need to wait for a therapist to start AAC. You can begin with a simple picture board today.
