Why Early Intervention Matters Most
The first 5 years of life represent a period of exceptional brain plasticity. Neural connections form at an unprecedented rate. Interventions during this period can significantly alter developmental trajectories in ways that become much harder to achieve after age 6.
Research consistently shows that early intensive intervention in autism produces better outcomes in language development, social skills, cognitive development, and adaptive behavior than later intervention — regardless of intervention type.
What "Early Intervention" Includes
Early intervention is not one thing — it is a coordinated set of services addressing all developmental areas:
- Speech-language therapy: Building communication in all modalities
- Occupational therapy: Sensory regulation, fine/gross motor, daily living skills
- Behavior therapy: Building learning readiness, functional skills
- Parent training: Equipping caregivers to support development at home
- Special education: Structured learning opportunities
Where to Access in India
District Early Intervention Centres (DEIC):
Established under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), DEICs exist in every district. They provide free screening, diagnosis, and intervention referral for children 0–18. A Developmental Pediatrician, Audiologist, SLP, Psychologist, and Special Educator are part of the team.
To access: visit the nearest Community Health Centre (CHC) or District Hospital and ask for DEIC referral.
NIMHANS Early Intervention Program (Bangalore): Comprehensive government program with parent training component.
Private Early Intervention Centers: Major cities have specialized pediatric therapy centers offering intensive, multi-disciplinary early intervention. Cost: ₹10,000–50,000/month for intensive programming.
