Insurance Landscape for Autism in India
Health insurance coverage for autism in India has improved significantly since IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) mandated that all standard health insurance policies must cover mental illness, including neurodevelopmental conditions, under the Mental Healthcare Act 2017.
However, coverage remains limited and inconsistent in practice.
What Is Typically Covered
Hospitalization: Any hospitalization related to autism (behavioral crisis requiring inpatient management, co-occurring medical conditions) is typically covered under standard health insurance.
Psychiatric consultation: Visits to psychiatrists for autism diagnosis, medication management, and follow-up.
Medication: Prescribed psychiatric medications (methylphenidate for ADHD, SSRIs for anxiety co-occurring with autism).
Diagnostic testing: Neurological evaluations, blood tests ordered in diagnostic process.
What Is Typically NOT Covered (but Should Be Advocated For)
Speech therapy: Usually not covered unless specifically included in the policy.
Occupational therapy: Usually not covered unless specifically included.
ABA therapy: Rarely covered.
School-based support: Not covered by health insurance.
How to Improve Coverage
When purchasing insurance: specifically ask about coverage for neurodevelopmental therapies. Some group insurance plans (employer-provided) have wider coverage. Look for policies that explicitly mention OPD therapy coverage.
When claiming: get a psychiatrist's referral for all therapy services. Frame claims within covered categories where possible (psychological treatment, mental health services).
