What Are Weighted Products?
Weighted vests and blankets use the principle of deep pressure stimulation — applying firm, even pressure to the body — to calm the nervous system. They are widely used in sensory integration therapy for autism.
Weighted vests are worn during the day, typically for 20-minute intervals. Weight is approximately 5% of body weight.
Weighted blankets are used during sleep or rest periods. Weight is approximately 10% of body weight.
What Does the Research Say?
The evidence is mixed but generally positive. Multiple small studies show weighted vests can: improve attention to task, reduce self-stimulatory behavior, improve sensory regulation, and reduce anxiety.
The effect is variable — some children respond dramatically, others show no benefit. There is no way to predict response without trying.
Practical Guidelines
Weight: 5% of body weight for vests, 10% for blankets. Do not exceed these percentages.
Duration: Wear vest for 20 minutes, then 20 minutes off. Continuous wear reduces the sensory input's effectiveness (habituation).
Timing: During specifically challenging activities — homework, transitions, group activities.
Safety: Never leave a very young child unsupervised with a weighted blanket.
Where to Buy in India
Weighted blankets: Available on Amazon India from ₹1,500–4,000 (look for occupational therapy weighted blankets). Also available from special needs equipment suppliers.
Weighted vests: OT supply companies in India, or custom-made. Search "weighted vest for autism India."
DIY option: Sew small pockets into a vest and fill with rice or sand bags. OTs can guide weight placement.
When to Involve an OT
An OT can assess whether your child is likely to benefit from weighted input, prescribe appropriate weight, and monitor response.
