Down Syndrome in India
Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) is the most common chromosomal condition, affecting approximately 1 in 800 live births. In India, with approximately 26 million annual births, this means approximately 32,500 children born with Down syndrome every year.
Down syndrome is associated with: intellectual disability (mild to moderate in most cases), characteristic physical features, congenital heart defects (40% of cases), thyroid dysfunction, hearing difficulties, visual difficulties, and increased risk of certain health conditions.
Development and Expectations
Children with Down syndrome reach all the same milestones as typically developing children — walking, talking, reading, socializing — typically on a slower timeline. With appropriate support and therapy, the range of ability in Down syndrome is wide. Many adults with Down syndrome live independently, hold jobs, and have rich social lives.
Early intervention is critical. Begin therapy (PT, OT, speech) as soon as possible — ideally before the child walks.
