Why Parent Support Groups Matter

Raising an autistic child in India can be isolating. Extended family may not understand, neighbours may judge, and professional support is often expensive and hard to access. Parent support groups change that.

Research consistently shows that parents who connect with others facing similar challenges experience lower rates of depression and burnout, have better knowledge about interventions and rights, and report higher quality of life despite caregiving demands.

A support group is not a therapy group — it is a community of people who understand your reality without needing explanation.

How to Start a Local Support Group

If no group exists in your area, you can start one. Here is a simple framework:

1. Find 3–5 other parents through your child's therapy centre or school

2. Choose a format — monthly in-person meeting, WhatsApp group, or both

3. Set simple ground rules — confidentiality, no unsolicited advice, no hierarchy

4. Invite a guest speaker occasionally — a therapist, lawyer, or parent further along the journey

5. Partner with a local NGO or clinic to formalise over time if the group grows
