Does Medication Treat Autism?
No medication treats the core features of autism (social communication differences, repetitive behaviors, sensory processing). However, medications can effectively treat co-occurring conditions that significantly impact quality of life: ADHD, anxiety, irritability and aggression, OCD, and sleep disorders.
Many autistic children in India are on medication not for "treating autism" but for managing specific challenges that interfere with therapy, learning, and daily life.
Common Medications Prescribed for Autistic Children in India
For irritability and aggression:
- Risperidone (Risperdal) — most commonly prescribed, FDA-approved specifically for autism irritability. Cost: ₹200–500/month generics.
- Aripiprazole (Abilify) — alternative to risperidone with different side effect profile. Cost: ₹600–2000/month.
For ADHD co-occurrence (very common — 30–50% of autistic children have ADHD):
- Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Methylin) — first-line ADHD medication
- Atomoxetine (Strattera) — non-stimulant alternative
- Cost: ₹300–1,500/month
For anxiety:
- Sertraline (Zoloft) — commonly used for anxiety and OCD features
- Fluoxetine (Prozac) — used for anxiety and repetitive behaviors
- Cost: ₹100–400/month generics
For sleep:
- Melatonin — first-line, available OTC, very safe. Cost: ₹200–600/month.
- Clonidine — sometimes used for sleep and ADHD. Prescription required.
Important Considerations Before Starting Medication
1. Get a proper psychiatric evaluation first. Medication should be prescribed by a child psychiatrist, not a general pediatrician or GP.
2. Confirm the target symptom. Know exactly what you are treating — is it attention, irritability, anxiety, or sleep? The goal determines the drug.
3. Understand monitoring requirements. Risperidone requires weight monitoring and metabolic checks. Stimulants require heart rate and blood pressure monitoring.
4. Trial period and goals. Set a clear 4–6 week trial with specific goals. If the goals are not met, discuss adjustment.
5. Medication plus therapy. Medication is most effective when combined with behavioral therapy. Medication alone is rarely sufficient.
Questions to Ask Your Child's Psychiatrist
- "What specific symptom are we targeting?"
- "What is the starting dose and how do we adjust?"
- "What side effects should I watch for?"
- "How will we know if it is working?"
- "What are the monitoring requirements?"
- "What happens if we want to stop — is tapering needed?"
