Who Can Diagnose Autism in India?
Autism diagnosis requires a multi-disciplinary evaluation including a Pediatric Psychiatrist or Developmental Pediatrician, Clinical Psychologist, Speech-Language Pathologist, and Occupational Therapist.
Diagnostic Tools Used in India
CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale) is most widely used. ISAA (Indian Scale for Assessment of Autism) was developed specifically for the Indian population and is recommended by NIMHANS. ADOS-2 is the international gold standard. ADI-R is a structured parent interview.
Where to Get Diagnosed
Government (free, longer wait): NIMHANS Bangalore (3–6 month waiting list), AIIMS Delhi/Mumbai/Bhubaneswar/Bhopal, District Early Intervention Centres (DEIC) for children 0–18.
Private (₹3,000–15,000 for full evaluation): Major cities have specialized child development centers. Search "developmental pediatrician [your city]."
What to Bring
All previous medical records, school reports and teacher observations, video of concerning behaviors at home (invaluable), developmental milestone dates, and any previous psychological assessments.
Age for Diagnosis
Reliable autism diagnosis is possible from 18 months. Most Indian children are diagnosed between 3–7. Do not let anyone tell you to "wait and see" past age 2.
After Diagnosis
Get the diagnostic report in writing with ICD-10 or DSM-5 codes. Apply for Disability Certificate. Apply for UDID card. Enroll in early intervention within 30 days.
