ADHD & Sleep Problems in India: Why ADHD Children Can't Fall Asleep

Why ADHD causes sleep difficulties, practical bedtime routines, and sleep strategies for Indian families.

ADHD and Sleep: The Connection

Up to 70% of children with ADHD have significant sleep difficulties. This is not coincidence — the same neurological differences that cause ADHD also affect the brain's sleep-wake regulation.

Common sleep problems in ADHD:

  • Difficulty falling asleep (sleep onset insomnia) — the hyperactive mind won't switch off
  • Restless sleep, frequent waking
  • Difficulty waking in the morning (sleep inertia)
  • Delayed sleep phase — feeling awake at night and sleepy in the morning

Poor sleep dramatically worsens ADHD symptoms the next day, creating a vicious cycle.

Why ADHD Brains Can't Wind Down

The ADHD brain has difficulty with transitions — including the transition from waking to sleeping. It requires more stimulation to feel "normal" and resists the sensory reduction of preparing for sleep.

Also, stimulant medication (if used) can delay sleep onset if given too late in the day.

Building an ADHD-Friendly Bedtime Routine

Start 60–90 minutes before target sleep time:

1. Screens off (blue light suppresses melatonin — use a red night light instead of phone)

2. Warm bath/shower — the drop in body temperature after a warm bath triggers sleepiness

3. Low stimulation activity — drawing, gentle reading, quiet music

4. Consistent bedtime — same time every night, including weekends

5. Cool, dark room — optimal sleep temperature is 18–21°C

Screen Time and Sleep

This is a major problem in Indian households. Screens before bed are particularly harmful for ADHD children because: blue light delays melatonin, exciting content revs up the ADHD brain, and children often hide phones after lights-out. Set a household "device curfew" 90 minutes before sleep.

Melatonin

Melatonin is available over-the-counter in India (Meloset, Zolpidem preparations). For ADHD children with sleep onset problems, low-dose melatonin (0.5–1mg, 30 minutes before bedtime) is commonly recommended by child psychiatrists. It is not addictive and does not cause dependency. Always consult your doctor before use.

Working with Medication Timing

If your child takes methylphenidate, the dose timing significantly affects sleep. Short-acting Ritalin after 3pm commonly causes insomnia. Discuss with your psychiatrist whether to reduce afternoon dose, switch to non-stimulant, or use melatonin as a bridge.
